According to a study by McKinsey, Indonesia is predicted to have the world’s 5th biggest number of Internet users by 2016 and become the world’s 7th largest economy by 2030. Due to these facts, many foreign investors are coming to Indonesia to find potential tech startups to invest. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of local startups that are ready to take this opportunity. Out of top 10 most visited websites by Indonesians, only 2 of them are local. Tech startups have a big potential since they can be started with minimum capital investment but can have a huge market capitalization in the future. Take Google for an example, it was started in a garage by 2 co-founders and now has a market capitalization of USD 400 billion (compared to McDonald’s market capitalization of USD 97 billion).
For those reasons, in March 18th, 2014, HarukaEdu formally opens the registration for its first, free, online course, Technopreneurship. The goal of this course is to provide a basic knowledge of technopreneurship and inspire and encourage young Indonesians, wherever they are, to become entrepreneurs and launch their technology startup.
Topics that will be discussed during this 6-week course are Introduction to Technopreneurship, Opportunity Identification and Market Research, Product Development, Business Model and Financial Projection, Execution Plan, and Funding. To make it easier for students to obtain an understanding of the topics under discussion, the course provides a sample of the step-by-step formation of a tech startup, from problem identification to fundraising.
The course will be taught by seasonal and successful entrepreneurs such as Andy Zain (MobileMonday), Alfred Boediman (Samsung), Ariadi Anaya (jobsDB), Budi Rahardjo (Indo CISC), Dian Noeh Abubakar (Kennedy Voice & Berliner), Fung Fuk Lestario (GEPI), Izak Jenie (Nexian MMS), Kartini Muljadi, SH (Kartini Muljadi & Rekan dan TempoScan Pacific Group), Natali Ardianto (Tiket.com), Novistiar Rustandi (HarukaEdu), Sanny Gaddafi (8villages), Toto Sugiri (Sigma Cipta Caraka dan Indonet), William Tanuwijaya (Tokopedia) and more.
According to Novistiar Rustandi, Co-founder of HarukaEdu, this Technopreneurship course was designed specifically to implement several concepts of future classroom: cloud computing, learning analytics, game-based learning, personalized learning environments, open content, and mobile learning. For an example, from the registration process till the end of the course, students will be given various challenges. “Most entrepreneurs like challenges and they will work hard to overcome those challenges. After students register for the course and before the course is started, students are already given the first challenge to collect the most points by inviting their friends to join the course. This challenge is given to let prospective students to practice their sales and marketing skill since these skills are two of the most important skills required to become a successful entrepreneur”, continued Novis who is also the Director of the Jakarta Founder Institute and a part-time Technopreneurship lecturer at Surya University and Bina Nusantara University.
“Our online course is also not the same as regular Massive Open Online Courses that are widely popular these days. We limit the number of students on each course to maintain the teaching quality. When the maximum number of students is reached, we will prioritize students who collect the most points from the first challenge to join the course. By doing this, we hope to attract students who are really interested to learn, not just registering their email address and never come back again. In the long-term, we will offer our online course for credits to offline degree students at conventional universities that are having problem finding quality lecturers for their offline programs”, added Novis.
At the end of the course, students are given an assignment to pitch their idea/startup and upload it on YouTube. The student with the best pitch from the first three batches will be provided various supports to execute his/her idea, among others:
- Scholarship from the Jakarta Founder Institute
- Exclusive business address and hot-desking for 12 months from The Executive Centre
- Legal consultation service from Trias Consulting
- Voice of Startup, a PR for startup service from Kennedy Voice & Berliner
- Co-working space from GEPI
- Mentorship regarding funding from IMJ Fenox
- Co-working space, Internet connection, and web hosting from Skystar Ventures
“We only pick one winner or the best from all the first three batches. In tech/Internet startup world, people and investors are only care about no. 1 and no. 2 in each area. We want our students to always aim and work hard to become the best or number one from the beginning”, explained Novis.
“We understand that our online Technopreneurship course is far from perfect. Based on our experience running the first three batches and feedback received, we will continuously improve our curriculum, learning methodology and learning management system to improve the quality and result.”
To join this online Technopreneurship course for free, go to and register at www.harukaedu.com. The first batch of the course will be started on April 10th, 2014 and last for 6 weeks until March 15th, 2014 and the second and third batch will be started subsequently.
